About us
St Martin’s is a family run, coeducational independent primary school of about 90 children between the ages of 4 and 11. It was founded in 1914 as a Church of England school and, while retaining a strong Christian ethos, accepts children from all denominations
The school has always been in the present building and, although it has been extended to meet modern needs, preserves a ‘homely’ feel. The grounds include a games area and a large grassed multi-purposed sports pitch.
The school has an excellent record of preparing children for secondary schools. Some of our children win scholarships to Wentworth College or Moyles Court; others move to the local state schools; the majority pass the selection tests to the local grammar schools. On average, 85% of our pupils reach the top 16% of the national ability range.
Atmosphere
Every effort is made to ensure that our children grow up in a friendly and supportive environment, where personal attention and achievement are foremost. The atmosphere is disciplined and purposeful, yet relaxed and lively. The relationship between staff and pupils is warm and respectful.
Our aim is to produce mature and happy children, who will be able to look back at their time at St Martin’s as among the best years of their lives.
The structure and character of the school enhance individual self respect and confidence, and encourage pupils to develop lively, enquiring minds and to form lasting friendships. The curriculum as a whole promotes the intellectual, spiritual, moral, creative and physical development of the pupils, and gives all age ranges the best possible chance of reaching their full potential.
A high standard of behaviour is maintained throughout the school. Pupils are expected to observe the school regulations, to be courteous and to show proper respect for others. Hard work, good behaviour and achievement are all systematically rewarded with stars, merit awards and commendations, which go towards an inter-house competition each term. There are also six ‘Pupil of the Week’ certificates to be won, and the staff award a trophy to the pupil who has been the most helpful and caring towards others each term.
